In my recent article, Contemplating Coherence, I wrote that we are currently undergoing a seismic shift in thinking regarding the fundamentals of our existence and nature of the universe. It is difficult to put into words the enormity of the impact on our future reality but as scientists come to comprehend more deeply that everything we perceive as matter is actually vibrational in nature (the fundamental particles making up matter are now seen to be wave-like excitations of a quantum field), we can expect this understanding to revolutionise each and every area of our lives. New inventions and technologies we can only dream of are on the horizon.
The idea that all is vibration (you can think of it as energy) and the aspects of our world we perceive as material are actually vibrations of a lower frequency giving only the appearance to our everyday senses of density and ‘hardness’, is a huge enough realisation. However, when we dig down into the implications of this truth for us humans the insights become even more mind-boggling. Energy cannot be divided, therefore if we, and all that we see is energy, we have to conclude that we are all connected - not only to one another but to everything around us. Interconnectedness is a fundamental feature of our reality and in terms of us as individuals that means there is no separation between our body, our mind and our spirit. I will talk more about what this means for us and how we live our lives in a future article, but for now let’s focus on the aspect of ourselves we have always regarded as physical, our bodies.
Biology, the study of living organisms, is just one aspect of life and our universe where there is a major rethink occurring. In the past biology has been very closely linked to chemistry, the branch of science concerned with the composition and properties of matter; biochemistry studies the chemical processes relating to living organisms. However, recently certain biologists have begun to shift their focus onto biophysics, studying biological phenomena using approaches from the science of physics. And because physics, the most fundamental of all sciences, now appreciates the vibrational nature of our universe thanks to the development of quantum physics, a new understanding of the vibrational quality of biological processes is emerging.

As the field of biology opens up to accept the idea that the molecules, cells and systems of living organisms are all functioning, ultimately, through the movement of energy (shifts in vibrational states), there is also the realisation that the seemingly strange phenomena of the sub-atomic quantum world (micro) also feature within the workings of whole organisms (macro). For example, quantum entanglement, whereby wave/particles (indicates their dual nature) such as photons and electrons once in relationship remain connected even when separated by vast distances, has been shown to play an important role in the energy transfer process during photosynthesis. And quantum tunnelling, whereby a wave/particle passes through an energy wall that classically it would have insufficient energy for, has been shown to enable enzymes to overcome energetic barriers and catalyse reactions with remarkable efficiency.
Much of the new research on quantum biology focuses on the transfer of energy along with information through light, or its wave/particle units, photons. Some of the remarkable discoveries show how animals and humans utilise light directly for metabolic energy production (previously thought to be a function exclusive to plants through photosynthesis) and also use it to give ‘structure’ to the body’s internal water, creating a liquid crystalline terrain that, via quantum mechanisms, allows for instantaneous information transfer around the body.
As you may imagine, these discoveries are revolutionising our understanding of how the body works and inevitably this will be followed by a fundamental shift in our views on health and medicine. Already, as scientists rediscover (our ancient ancestors already knew) the body’s energetic template or biofield, new (actually some are very ancient) ways of treating the body using energy therapies are being explored and scientifically validated.
And in case you are wondering, all of this is hugely relevant for our understanding of the heart. In fact, the light energy stored in structured internal water that makes up a large part of the blood (blood plasma is 90% water) appears to be a main driver of its movement. This helps solve the conundrum of where the massive amount of force needed to propel the blood around the body comes from (the force generated by the pumping heart is nowhere near enough). I’ll be exploring this and related topics a lot more in later articles.
This is just one of the many long-unanswered biological questions quantum discoveries are helping to solve and in these exciting times, more mysteries will surely soon be unravelled. It’s a lot to get our heads around though, and that’s why we need those with deeper knowledge and great elucidatory skills to help us understand. Recently, when I was doing some research in this area, I was delighted to come across just such a person; the educator, author and therapist, Patricia Worby. Her book ‘Life Illuminated’ provides a fantastic overview of the concepts I have mentioned plus others. Even more delighted was I when Patricia agreed to be a guest for one of the Awakening Heart Collective’s Audience With events as well as an Adventures of the Awakening Heart podcast interview.
If you’re interested in the new discoveries relating to the fundamentals of our existence and how this knowledge is revolutionising understanding of the body and our health (how could you not be?!) then you may like to join us for An Audience with Patricia Worby, a free online event to be held on 10th April, 7-8.30pm.
