Paul Dieppe is no ordinary doctor. For a start he has risen to the dizzy heights in his profession becoming world renonwed in his field of rheumatology and been made professor several times. But whilst these achievements are not those of an average doctor, Paul stands out for other reasons. Since he was young Paul has had a number of deeply connecting experiences and these inspired him, in the second half of his career, to ask the question most doctors don't appear to consider that carefully, 'what does healing actually mean?' This question led him on a research journey that lasted two decades and took him all over the world. He says he still hasn't found the full answer (how could anyone, healing will always hold some mystery), however he certainly now has a good sense of the essence of healing and I really enjoyed exploring this with him in this interview - our views are very much aligned.
A couple of other things about Paul; first of all he is a very humble man which is such a beautiful quality and kind of unusal in someone of his stature, and secondly he is a great storyteller. Paul has some amazing stories to tell, including that of him being held hostage in Kuwait for several months, and I highly recommend his excellent book Healing and Medicine to discover more. But no need to wait until you've purchased the book, sit back now and relax into this conversation and I hope you enjoy Paul's stories as much as I did.
