Heartfelt Revelations of a Dance Improvisor

I first met Dance Improvisor, Kirstie Simson a few years ago at a conference exploring the importance of spiritual connection for those living with cancer. Kirstie's honest and raw account of her personal journey with cancer and the powerful role dance had played in her recovery, followed by a beautiful solo performance, was deeply moving. When we reconnected recently, I sensed the flow of life, the swirl of dance had carried her some way foward. I felt a new energy, an additional sparkle and was delighted to hear her describe how heart connection is a central inspiration in her latest work.
Dance improvisation, the spontaeous inspired creation of movement without pre-choreographed steps, allows a dancer to touch in to and express their truest feelings. This has to be therapeutic for the dancer themselves, something Kirstie will attest to, but to be in the presence of such authenticity is also healing for those witnessing the movement unfold. Kirstie is very aware of the powerful impact dance can have on audiences and she speaks of inspired movement capturing the intelligence of life - 'embodied intelligence' she calls it. In her mind this creative higher-order process reminds audiences of the fundamental truths life wishes to convery and one of those, hugely important, is that ultimately, we are all connected.
From my own experience, it seems that embodied intelligence—the heart of improvisation—is advantageous as we undertake the momentous challenge to shift our consciousness from a human-centric perspective, to a lived understanding that we are an integral part of the whole of life. Kirstie Simson
